ABOUT US

Welcome to the Emerson Elementary Webpage. We hope this site is informative and answers some of the questions you may have about our wonderful school.

Emerson Elementary is a part of the Ionia Public School District. Emerson was built in the year 1923. Over the years the building was used as an elementary school and as a Junior High School. Emerson was used as a training facility for the Michigan Department of Corrections for a period of time. In 1996 Emerson reopened as a neighborhood elementary school following a major renovation.

Currently Emerson Elementary School houses approximately 210 students. There is one all-day, every-day kinderstart and kindergarten classroom and one section at each grade level from first through fifth grades. Emerson also houses 2 Special Ed classes(MICI & IRR), 2 Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classes and 1 Great Start Readiness Program(GSRP).

Emerson Elementary School offers all the core curricular areas of English/Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We are very pleased that the elective courses of Art, Music, and Physical Education are also offered by certified teachers. Students are also scheduled once a week for a visit to the library to check out books and hear wonderful stories.

Emerson Elementary received the prestigious “Golden Apple Award” in 2002. This award is given to schools that show a large increase in their overall MEAP scores. $10,000 was awarded to Emerson Elementary to use on educational needs. Emerson has also met the Annual Yearly Progress goals set forth by the Michigan Department of Education.
